High-Strength Structural Nuts – Hot Dip Galvanized HDG Heavy Hex Nut ASTM – The most common hexagonal fastener with internal threads that screws on to the shank of a bolt or a hex cap screw. Hex nuts have an interior thread that is used to screw the nut onto a hex bolt with matching thread. The use of hex nuts provides a strong, secure join with the bolt that is able to withstand high wear, stress and strain. A finished hex nut is a classic design which is widely used for industrial as well as commercial use. When stainless steel is not an option due to the application or budget, hex nuts are commonly given an electro-deposited zinc plated finish which gives it a different look and feel.

Heavy hex nuts, as defined in ANSI B18.2.2 are greater in width and thickness than standard hex nuts. ASTM A563 is the most commonly referenced ASTM specification for carbon and alloy steel nuts. It includes 8 grades and covers sizes from 1/4″ to 4″.ASTM A194 covers carbon and alloy steel nuts that are intended for use in high pressure and/or high temperature applications. It also covers sizes from 1/4″ to 4″ and includes dozens of grades. SAE J995 is another frequently referenced specification for carbon and alloy steel nuts.
