In order to make the contact surface have enough friction, it is necessary to increase the clamping force of the components and the friction coefficient of the components’contact surface. The clamping force between components is achieved by applying pre-tension force to bolts, so bolts must be made of high strength steel. In high strength bolted connections, the magnitude of friction coefficient has a great influence on the bearing capacity. The test results show that the friction coefficient is mainly affected by the form of the contact surface and the material of the component. In order to increase the friction coefficient of the contact surface, sand blasting and wire brush cleaning are often used to treat the contact surface of components within the connection area. There are actually two types of high strength structure bolts: friction type and compression type. The criterion of bearing shear force for friction type high strength bolts is that the shear force caused by design load does not exceed the friction force.
